Jersey – we made it!
21 Apr 2013 - Gavan Burden
Well, here we are – well almost all of us. KP was absent on Friday with reasonable reason, being late. Gibbo became the Invisible Man – allegedly here, but nowhere to be seen! JB was here in body, but not in cricket.
It was a great game today for spectators. Grizzle lost the toss and we were consigned to bat. Late night revelers fell like flies whilst a dogged Grizzle ground away; making excellent use of hogging the batting he strolled to 70 off 42 overs, which was a good job too. Ant Shales got a snorting yorker a bit too soon; Luke Blackaby, just back from a storming tour of Sri Lanka, must have been disappointed with his performance with enough staying power for only three balls, all of which meant we had a rather shaky start.
We clawed ourselves back into it through Tom Coldman getting a sound 31 and getting off the mark with a 6 to show how easy it all should be. Olly Howick stroked 22 and looked as disappointed as the crowd when he picked out a fielder in some ridiculous fielding position just behind square on the leg side. Olly Durell, aka Butler, struck the ball cleanly and straight for 16 off 17 balls; in fact straight to mid off. Tim Shaw decided he didn’t need to use his bat; a decision that has cost him the use his little toe, 3 hours in a&e and later cost JB the use of his crutch. So, we had 190 to defend.
We probably needed 10 overs in the field to blow away the cobwebs. Sadly Tim could only bowl 3 overs, which went for a miserly 6 runs before he had to hobble off to be examined by their physio. After that Tom Coldman started, once again, to claw us back into the game with 2-28 off 10. Grizzle, proving the value of not being out the night before, complemented him with almost identical figures. Alas, with Tim in hospital we ran out of bowlers and Jersey crept over the line with 11 balls left.
It was a great experience playing a very friendly and welcoming ICC side and our performance certainly was no disgrace.
The question is, can Grizzle do it again after a night out? We will soon find out.
