Bromley

17 Jun 2013 - David Harkin

Stand in skipper Ed Goodworth won a crucial toss on a very damp Vine following Friday nights downpour and had no hesitation in bowling first. The choice was obvious and it immediately paid dividends as Piers Robinson swooped at mid-wicket to run out one of the Bromley openers second ball of the game as he attempted a suicidal single. The Vine openers Thompson and Goodworth took a couple of overs to get into their stride, but were soon causing significant problems for opposition. The latter picked up three quick wickets supported by some excellent catching by the veteran Iqbal brothers in the slips to leave the Bromley batting order in tatters. The introduction of new boy David Leach and player of the season so far Julius Cowdrey only intensified the pressure on Bromley. Leach fresh from wrapping up the Bickley innings last week with two wickets in two balls promptly completed a “hat trick” with from his first ball on the Vine. Leach was comfortably the pick of the bowlers showing control and hostility as he returned the excellent figures of 3-17 off 8.2 overs. Skipper Goodworth reintroduced himself to the attack and promptly picked up two wickets to end up with 5-21 from his 9 overs and the opposition, one of the leagues stronger sides, had been skittled for 68.

This left the Vine with a tricky 45 minutes to negotiate before the excellent teas provided by new tea lady Maggie Harriott. Bromley managed to take a couple of wickets, but the period largely went without incident as the Vine reached 35 for 2 at the break. After tea it was one way traffic as the excellent Cowdrey finished the match in short time striking a belligerent 36 not out. Opener White fell aiming for glory for a well made 25 with one needed to win. All in another excellent performance from the 2nd team who are now second in the league and will only get stronger as students and injured players return to compete for places.

Sanlam Private Investments Man of the Match is David Leach for his first Vine hat trick and an outstanding bowling performance on home debut.
