2’s defend 146 away to Beckenham

8 Aug 2017 - Tom Parsons

Sevenoaks Vine 2nd XI visited Beckenham CC which would be their first full game for 2 weeks. Sevenoaks Vine won the toss and elected to bat first. Sevenoaks Vine were in trouble early losing a wicket in the first over of the game with a great in swinging ball. The Vine managed to steady the ship slowly but with the loss of 4 wickets in quick succession the Vine were in trouble. Young batsman J. Bevan-Thomas and J. Carslaw batted with mature heads and gradually got runs back on the board from the Vine with a valuable partnership of 44. Unfortunately for the Vine more wickets fell just as momentum was being gained and a last partnership of 20 runs got the Vine to 146.

The Vine feeling confident with their bowling capability opened with H. Johnson and J. Carslaw and the usual bowling partnership made the Beckenham batsman realise it would not be an easy chase for them. With the low total both bowlers bowled tight lines and their patience paid off when J. Carslaw removed two batsmen quickly and at the half way point of 25 overs Beckenham were 44-2. Brilliant bowling from L. Burns 4-14 removed the Beckenham middle order after drinks and some sharp work in the field from the Vine saw 2 run outs making the game go down to the last over with Beckenham needing 11 from it. J. Carslaw bowled the last over and only went for 4 runs resulting in a win for the Vine.
