3rd XI Go Top with Win Over Oakfield Warriors
27 Jul 2021 - Harry Robinson
The Vine 3s hosted Oakfield Warriors at Otford and having lost the toss found themselves in the field. Will Ansell and Pete Thresher opened the bowling and found themselves under pressure as the Oakfield batsmen started very aggressively. Ansell and Thresher each picked up an early wicket but after 16 overs Oakfield had reached 100-2. Pace off the ball then changed the game as Hugo Tudor picked up two wickets in his first over with good catches by Leo Bezuidenhout and Pete Thresher and then crucially Andy Akerman removed Oakfields other opening bat who had reached 67 off only 58 deliveries leaving the score at 130-5 off 21 overs. Wickets continued to fall with a further wicket for both Tudor and Akerman but Oakfield were able to bat out their 40 overs and reached 192-8. The Vine reply got off to a slow but steady start despite the loss of both Andy Akerman and Steve Bezuidenhout cheaply. After 20 overs James Thresher and Arj Sharma had moved the total onto 67-2. They then combined to accelerate very well and the score reached 134 off 30 overs before Sharma was out for a well made 42 leaving 60 needed off the last 10 overs. Will Peters then added a quick fire 15 before being bowled as the Vine edged towards their target but the required run rate remained a run a ball. 19 off 18 balls became 13 off 12 before Scott Moseley hit a couple of welcome boundaries as the Vine finally got the runs off the penultimate delivery in no small part due to the fantastic innings played by opener James Thresher who finished unbeaten on 79.
