3rds put up a fight in the rain

31 Jul 2017 - Tom Parsons

Saturday proved to be another frustrating weekend for the Third Team. At a very wet

Southfleet ground, the Third Team were put in to bat. And what an important toss it

proved to be. The young top order never really got going, as the Southfleet openers

bowled tight and used the facilities well, restricting the Vine to 44-4 after 10 overs. Page

(19) and Bezuidenhout (14) offered some sort of resistance, however, another quick

collapse saw the Vine bowled out for 56 as the rain began to fall.

Regardless of the score, the Vine came out determined to take some early scalps and

hopefully kickstart a Southfleet collapse. Robinson bowled with good pace on a slow,

green and very wet wicket. The rain fell throughout the game, yet, never got hard enough

to be deemed unsafe despite the fielders and bowlers struggling to maintain their feet. In

all credit to the Vine, there was a great intensity in the field, at it showed, with Robinson

eventually picking up two wickets. However, the Southfleet batsmen batted sensibly and

knocked off the total in 12 overs.

Unfortunately, relegation for the Third Team seems somewhat inevitable, with five wins

needed from their last five, and other results needing to go their way. However, this won’t

stop the team from playing with passion and commitment. Next weekend, we welcome

New Ash Green CC to Orchard Field.
