Alan Hurd

28 Mar 2016 - Gavan Burden

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Alan Hurd over the Easter weekend.

Born on 7th September 1937, Alan will be remembered with great affection by the club as captain of a strong 1st XI side until the league started, and before that for his spin bowling role on the Essex staff from 1958 – 1960 for whom he played 90 times taking 249 wickets, with a best of 6-15.

A Cambridge Blue, after his First Class career Alan was persuaded to join the teaching staff of Sevenoaks School by L C Taylor to teach English and quickly assumed responsibility for cricket, overseeing the development of Chris Tavaré, Paul Downton, Guy Spelman & Will House amongst many others.

As a regular visitor to The Vine on a Saturday afternoon and a great supporter of the club, Alan was always happy to while away a Saturday afternoon discussing the game, especially if it involved a glass of whiskey.

He will be greatly missed by the club and his many friends.
