Sevenoaks Vine 1st XI beat Blackheath in thriller

4 Jul 2017 - Tom Parsons

Sevenoaks Vine 1st XI got back to winning ways beating Blackheath in a thriller on the Vine. Stand-in captain Tom Parsons won the toss and batted first on a wicket that played very well throughout the day. After 7 balls the Vine were 6-2 after Shales (first ball) and Bekker departed knicking to slip. Karl Pearson came to the wicket and looked determined and stood his ground for 100 balls making a very good 55. Harrison and Zak made good contributions but it was Michael Barber who made the difference. He got 77 off 61 including some brilliant sweeps and reverse sweeps off the spinners. The Vine finished on 225-8 from the 50 overs.
Blackheath’s innings got off to a flyer with them visitors on 60-0 after 5. Spin came into the attack along with Karl Pearson and John Bowden got the break through after Warren Lee found Zak Crawley at cow corner who took a good catch. JB and KP bowled brilliantly for 13 overs where they only scored 20 runs. Then Tom Coldman came on and just was too good on a pitch that helped the spinners. They all ragged it and 2 wickets in an over from Coldman put the Vine in control. Harrison Smyth bowled really well from both ends but it was TC who again got the main break through. George Wells was on 70 and then just skied one in the air and TC took a great caught and bowled. Tom Parsons then took a stunner (with wrong hand) to get get rid of Jahid Ahmed and the crowd went wild and the Vine were on top. Parsons came on to bowl for the first time in 7 weeks and burgled 2 wickets. And then JB finished it off in the penultimate over to give the Vine a win by 20 runs!
The lads were on fire in the field. Best the Vine has fielded in a while and Michael Barber was awarded MOTM after winning Rock, Paper, Scissors v Tom Coldman.Screen Shot 2017-07-04 at 10.53.59
