U13s Begin With a Win and a Loss

Premier League vs Plaxtol (away)
The Premier league campaign got off to a winning start in exciting fashion away at Plaxtol with a last over win for the Vine. Even though it was a new group with many playing together for the first time, the team bowled and fielded consistently well to restrict Plaxtol to 123 all out in their 25 overs. Notable mentions for Jaison who kicked off the season in fine style with a wicket first ball of the season as part of an excellent spell, and despite good performances from a couple of strong players near the top of the Plaxtol order, once our spin duo of Tristan and Lucy got settled they created plenty of problems and thereafter there was a steady flow of wickets, with particular mentions for Fred Tiley for two wickets, as well as wickets for Max, Nathan and Thomas. Fielding was excellent throughout, with our captain and wicketkeeper Will also contributing a smart piece of thinking to complete a run out to add to a very tidy display behind the stumps.
The run chase got off to an excellent start with Ben and Nathan putting on an opening stand of 60 that was particularly notable for the excellent running between the wickets and clear calling. However,, Ben’s retirement and the introduction of Plaxtol’s premier seamers saw a steady flow of wickets leaving the game very much in the balance and the Vine needing just shy of a run a ball off the last 7 overs. However, Jaison rounded off his player of the match performance with a composed and well paced innings of 30* that included a towering straight six to take us to the brink of victory before being retired.
Notwithstanding some late innings excitement and the loss of another wicket to a run out as the team chased the remaining runs to bring us level, Olly and Olly kept their calm to steer us home with Olly B pulling the first ball of the final over for 4 to seal a terrific 3 wicket win and cue celebrations from players and spectators alike. Thanks to Plaxtol for hosting, both team for playing the game in an excellent spirit, well captained by Will and a great start to the new season.
Championship vs Bidborough
The Championship is going to provide us with a great test this year as we are up against many good clubs’ first teams. Bidborough proved slightly too strong for us today although the kids should take heart from their performance. Most of them were playing with new teammates and we were helped out by 2 under 11s as we were short on availability.
Bidborough batted first and got off to a more than solid start. with both openers eventually retiring having passed 30. None of the bowlers let themseleves down and Eddie, Jasmine, Lizzie and Hugo all turned in some really good 2 over spells to end with some good figures and Chris kept really well on a tough ground, The opposition, despite losing regular wickets and being pegged back in the last 5 overs, posted a daunting 146 for the loss of five wickets.
The Vine chase was solid but tough with conditions getting increasingly bowler friendly and the “Bidborough slope” helping the locals. Bowling was strong with 4 of the home team’s attack being extremely accurate. Hugo, Jasmine and James all batted well and Chris O looked set before being bowled by one that kept ankle height. That said the task of over 7 an over was too much and Vine fell 35 short. As the group gains confidence and gets to know each other better it will get stronger and also noisier in the field with encouragement (Bidborough was respectful but materially louder) which will help. I think that our mixed (in gender and ages) group of players should be proud of themselves and hope they enjoyed it
Next week we only have one fixture – in the Championship – away against local rivals Holmesdale. In the early games we will aim to give all the squad members a chance and some will move around although we will uphold the spirit of the league structure.
