Vine 3rds beat Hartley in the heat

19 Jun 2017 - Tom Parsons

On a very hot Saturday afternoon, the Vine 3rd XI took on local rivals Hartley at Otford.

Hartley won the toss and elected to bat first on a flat looking wicket. Despite this, opening

bowlers Cooper-Fogarty and Robinson restricted the Hartley openers to a slow start, with

Cooper-Fogarty bowling a fine spell of 5 overs, 4 maidens, 2 runs for 1 wicket. Domine

(three wickets) and G Scott (two wickets) bowled well together in the middle overs,

however, the Hartley batsmen consolidated the innings well pushing them up to 131 for 4

off 30 overs. A final flourish with the bat by the Hartley batsmen saw them finish their 40

overs on a respectable score of 194-7.

The Vine chase had an interesting start, with the score at 22-0 off two overs due to some

erratic swing bowling. However, the 3s soon lost three quick wickets, leaving us at 43-3

off the first ten overs. The experience of Cooper-Fogarty (37) and Iqbal (86 not out) then

shone; the pair steadied the ship taking the Vine to 115-4 with thirteen overs remaining. A

partnership of 52 in seven overs between Iqbal and Robinson (24) slowly took the game

away from Hartley, with the Vine needing 25 runs with four overs remaining, with the

game firmly in the balance, heading into the final over with some smart death bowling.

Only 6 was required off the final over with G Scott on strike. The first ball was a dot. The

second, a quick single which brought Iqbal on strike with 5 needed off the final 4 balls.

The third ball of the over was dispatched with ease by Iqbal for 4 to cow-corner levelling

the scores. A single would win the game, but a cover drive for 4 by Iqbal finished off the

game in style to complete a close game between two evenly matched sides.

The 3’s will hope to build upon this win into next weekend’s fixture away at Lessa Christ

Church who currently sit in mid-table.
