Kent Over 50s

21 Apr 2013 - Charlie Compton

A very decent day and as usual a very competent Kent team turned out to do battle with OO’s. The last time we beat this lot it was down to a guest, Steven Smith of Australia. We didn’t have him available, presumably due to the IPL.

The toss was predictable with Kent 50+ batting in a 32 over affair. Ian Smith and David Frost giving little away. The run rate was under control but a missed chance off the first ball of the game, would have been a great start, was not followed by many more opportunities although the bat was beaten regularly. Alan Churchman made the breakthrough with Simon Constantine taking the catch – twice! Further wickets fell to Richard Crook and Mike Jones but Kent accelerated to reach 206 for 3 off their 32. Bob P would have had a good wicket if the Stand in Skipper (SiS) could catch better.

Jeanette produced a ridiculously brilliant tea hoping the oppo would over-eat and get bogged down. They tried. However, OO’s batting may have done the same with the exception of Bob P, who was not allowed to participate in the cake eating! Bob set off with a bunch of good shots before being unluckily run out for 28. Ian Sykes was expected to lead the charge in Steven Smith’s absence but was unlucky to get a nick which the keeper held, standing up.

The OO’s challenge slightly fizzled out as the middle order didn’t quite function with the exception of Mike Joes with 16. SiS ran out of partners on 20* at the end. 87 all out but not as bad as it sounds.

Very enjoyable nonetheless.
