8 Jun 2012 - Gavan Burden
The Old Oaks Festival went ahead on Friday despite of fairly adverse weather conditions, strong wind and a fair amount of rain. The Older Oaks elected to bat first but struggled to get the ball off the square. The late withdrawal of the late chairman and late arrival of Jeremy Lawson meant that the younger oaks were down to the bare bones in terms of bowlers, with Gibbo doubling up as pinch bowler as well as keeper, although not in the same over. I haven’t got the scorebook in front of me, but there was a useful knock from the Gavan Burden, who rode his luck a bit with a hideous “dropped and bowled” from myself.
As the younger side were down to 9 for most of their innings we borrowed a couple of fielders, notably John Harkin who caught the Old skip (19) with an outrageous catch off the bowling of young skip!
Jamie Rose of the Chronicle also took a fine catch for the side he was not supposed to be playing for. Harkin was later to drop a much easier chance while fielding for his own side. McMenemy struggled with the bat, particularly off my bowling, in spite of quite a lot of chat. The Older oaks never got above 6 an over and their total of 84 off 15 was always going to be difficult to defend.
The Younger Oaks got off to a shaky start losing debutants Beaufoy and Constantine cheaply, both bowled off the pads by Bonze I think.
Thresher retired hurt with a knee injury, but Geoff Smith, also on debut steadied the ship with his 25no before Lawson (28 no) and Jones (12no), both looked very comfortable taking the younger oaks home with about 3 overs to spare.
Thanks to Mikey P for organising the burgers, and Mike T for umpiring
I am sure Gav will have a different take on events………
Next up the Orbilians…….
