St. Michaels

25 May 2012 - Gavan Burden

At last some sunshine last Friday, and our first game of the season.

We hosted St Michaels in an 18 over game, we won the toss and elected to bat. Thompson (15) and Tovey(5) opened the batting and got at off to a start in friendly bowling conditions, Ex skip got to 12 before being dismissed by ex Somerset player Simon Ecclestone. Macca batted well for his 28no, as did new recruits Skilton (19) & Goodrich (17 no). We struggled to a below par 127 off 18 overs.

The writing was on the wall when Ecclestone (30 no) cleared the pavillion in the first over, and both he and Ashdown (25 retired after only about 5 overs. It was never really a contest and they got to our total with 4 overs to spare, without needing the big hitting talents of Duncan Sinclair.

There was a large gulf in class to be honest, but having read the small print of the Old Oaks Runes, written in the beer garden of the Chequers in the winter of 1733, it states that those who hath previously played professional cricket shalt not playeth against Ye Olde Oaks. Therefore Ecclestone’s 30 were struck off and the Old Oaks won by 29. Next up is Will House’s XI…………..

Also, next week Sevenoaks Prep have cancelled, due to it being half term. I am hoping to be able to field 2 teams in a “Festival of Old Oaks Cricket” as we have about 20 saying they are available. I anticipate there being a few drop outs, so it might be a good chance to get all those people who say they wouldnt mind a run out to put their money where their mouth is. Also the Older oaks who fancy another run out…….
