After a heavy defeat last time round against a strong Holmesdale team a vast improvement was required to be competitive especially on the bowling and fielding front. Conor Driscoll came in for his debut as we rung the changes, interestingly Holmesdale only made the one from the previous game.
Holmesdale won the toss and decided to bat. SC opened the bowling and immediately had Surguy caught at silly mid-off by FK, off the third ball of the match. A great breakthrough getting Surguy who scored 28* against us in the last match. The celebrations were short lived as Wines hit SC’s next two balls for 4 but SC had the last laugh as he bowled Wines with the last ball of the first over. ZI came down the hill and bowled a tidy over before SC then had Green well caught by B-T for 1, 21-3 off 3 overs. Holmesdale continued to attack and were 35-3 off 5 overs before B-Tbrought himself on and bowled Earl with his first ball. In his second over it was FK again who caught Chessell at short Mid off.
B-T and FK bowled tidily to get to half way with Holmesdale on 50-5. An excellent start by the boys, backed up by some good fielding especially in the deep by GS where the ball seemed to follow him all evening. GC bowled a good length and mixed his pace up but it was CD on debut with his third ball clean bowling Masdin for 17 that left 67-4 off 14 overs. GS and EG joined in the action and in the former’s first over ZI did a fantastic Run Out hitting one stump, EG then bowled Holiman for 1 and with two overs left, 92-8. ZL and CW bowled the last 2 overs with Holmesdale looking to accelerate with Norris looking to hit boundaries, CW bowled Norris and then had their No.11 Run Out with one ball left. 110 All out, Holmesdale’s lowest total of the season and first time they have been bowled out, a fantastic effort in the field and with the ball, with only 19 extras this time round, our lowest of the season, backed up by some tidy keeping by TG and JP who shared the duties.
Still 111 to win was going to be a tall order against an experienced pace attack.
TG and ZI opened the batting but TG was needlessly Run Out going for a second run in the very first over – the 4th Run Out of an opener in 4 games, all needlessly is not good enough and one that needs working on. We cannot afford to give a good side easy wickets. Masdin bowled ZI next over and in the 3rd over GC was bowled by a good ball from Surguy, 6-3 off 3 overs was not the start that was required. B-T was joined by FK but the former got a disappointing decision LBW to Chessell for 2, 11-4.
SC and FK batted sensibly against tight bowling keeping the scoreboard ticking over with the former opening the face and using the pace of the ball and taking us to 38-4 at half way. FK went LBW in the 11th over, 41-4 an excellent 30 run partnership. ZL supported SC well on the back of a couple of good knocks in previous games, but soon SC was Run Out for an excellent 13 as they looked to push the score along. EG and CD both went for 0 the former Run Out going for a quick single and CD caught off a quick short ball. CW batted well against the pace bowlers running quick singles and relishing the chance to play boys two years above him. ZL was another Run Out casualty before GS was bowled off the last ball of the match, 72 All out.
A loss by 38 runs but nothing to be ashamed of considering the quality of opposition and a vast improvement on the 105 loss of three weeks ago. The bowling, ground fielding and catching were excellent as was the batting fightback, but we must learn the lessons of getting a good platform with the bat and not get out needlessly especially against good opposition.
Many thanks to Peter Conley for Umpiring.
