We hosted Cowdrey again after requiring to replay our incomplete match from earlier in the season. I was looking to keep the same side that did so well that game but with holidays we required three boys to come in, Wilde, Lenhart, Easterbrook. We had dominated the previous game but re-iterated to the boys that it was a new game and both sides started on 0.
Cowdrey won the toss and decided to bat. The first wicket fell to the first ball of the second over, a good catch by FL at square leg off the bowling of SZ. B-T was soon in on the act mixing his left arm off spin with chinamen, having Williams caught by SZ. 21-2 off 6 overs. FL bowled a better spell after the last game vs T.Wells going for 6 runs off 2 overs, before EG bowled McGroaty their star player for 16 clipping the leg bail, 36-3 off 11 overs.
EG bowled an excellent spell with all deliveries on a great length, CW continued the leg spin theme and took two wickets in his first over, the first caught and bowled and the second LBW, 43-5 and conceded only 4 runs off his two overs. Cowdrey were finding it hard to score and ZL then got a wicket with his second ball before Cowdrey recovered putting on 20 runs for the next pair before SZ bowling the last over picked up two wickets both LBW finishing with excellent figures, 3-1-3-3, his best performance with the ball for the season. Cowdrey finished on 66-8.
An excellent all round fielding performance with both WP and JP keeping very well and only conceding 4 byes, a huge improvement on the number of byes conceded in the last two matches.
FL opened up with ZL and after so many games with needless Run Outs the penny finally dropped as they slowly built a good partnership, although there were some close calls! They put on 31 before FL was caught behind for 5 in the 8th over, the highest 1st wicket partnership of the season. A good base for us to go on and win the game, ZL soon followed LBW for 9, 40-2 and then it was B-T and JP that took us close to victory before JP was bowled by McGroaty, 63-3. SC soon followed bowled by a beauty from the same bowler. It was left to BW to hit the winning runs, leaving B-T on 24* and 5 overs remaining.
An excellent win and great way to finish the season, everyone played their part in a real team effort.
Many thanks to everyone that helped supply an excellent tea, Richard Collens for Umpiring and Simon Williams for scoring.
