On Monday we hosted Cowdrey CC in the second round of Border League games looking to build on the excellent win of the previous week with debutants Jack Pullen, Seth Zuberi, Charles Tetley, Thomas Glaister, Charlie Williams and William Parr coming into the team.
Cowdrey gave us a tough game the week before and were out to reverse the result. Cowdrey won the toss and we were asked to bat first. George Conley and Zak Iqbal were asked to open up and got us off to a good start taking on the board the lessons of the previous week of calling and running hard between the wickets, helped by Cowdrey fielding very deep and not pressurising the batsmen.
ZI went LBW in the 8th over for 10 bringing HB-T to the wicket. HB-T has been in great early season form and continued where he left off from the week before, keeping the scoreboard ticking over to be 46-1 after 10 overs.
Shortly after the break the rain came and an early tea was taken with the Vine 55-1 off 12 overs. We pushed hard on the accelerator after the break with the bowlers struggling with the wet ball scoring 20 runs in two overs. HB-T soon retired for an excellent 28*, who was quickly followed by GC for 27*, who batted very well not giving a chance and running well between the wickets.
That meant two new batsmen at the wicket, Thomas Glaister and Sam Collens who continued to increase the run rate taking the score to 99-1 after 17 overs before TG was bowled. With only 3 overs left we continued to bat unselfishly losing Ewan Gavin and Finn Langley in the last over when looking for quick runs and SC to the last ball of the innings for a well made 11. We finished on 108-5 scoring 53 runs in the last 8 overs, Cowdrey conceding 31 extras.
ZI opened up the bowling down the hill and SC ran their opener out first ball when looking to run for a bye. SC took the second over and Cowdrey had not learnt their lesson and another run out off the first ball over the year due to excellent fielding. This was followed by SC bowling Joe Hart who had made 26* the previous game, off an inside edge. 3-3 off two overs, Seth Zuberi bowling in his first game knocked over their next batsman with his first ball, beating him for pace and bowling a good over. Enter HB-T having their next batsman well caught by SZ at short extra cover above his head, a second wicket in the over followed bowled leaving Cowdrey 9-6.
Finn Langley was itching to get in on the act after two wickets the week before but could not manage to get another breakthrough, Charlie Williams bowled his leg spin/googlies to good effect considering he had to contend with a slippery ball. With the dark clouds moving quickly in it was left to Charles Tetley to break the partnership bowling their number 5 batsman, TG, GC, EG and William Parr bowled well to no avail as it started raining and we had to come off as the light and rain leaving Cowdrey 45-7 off 11.3 overs.
Although we gave away 21 extras they were difficult conditions to bowl in with the ball slipping out of hands. Jack Pullen kept wicket tidily and was very vocal behind the stumps encouraging the bowlers. The fielding was a marked improvement on the week before pressurising the batsmen leading to Run Outs and encouraging one another, the sign of a good team spirit.
Disappointing not to get over the line and win the game, but very encouraged in the way we played with everyone playing their part highlighting the depth of talent in the Under 11’s squad this year.
We must not rest on our laurels and continue work hard at all aspects of our game.
Many thanks to our Tea ladies led by Faye Iqbal and Rachel H-T for an excellent feast and to Neil Tetley for scoring and the many other parents for their support.
