19 May 2013 - Mike Wright
Match report: Vine U13 vs T’ Wells – 19 May 2013
Vine hosted Tunbridge Wells U13 Division 1 at the Vine in Sevenoaks. Thankfully the predictions of rain were incorrect and the day was bright and warm.
Vine won the toss and elected to bat (3 players having mistakenly gone to the Otford pitch).
The openers S Brown and C Bryant were quickly back in the hut losing their stumps to some straight and fast bowling. D Reynolds held up his end but H Jones received a seaming ball that started on leg and the top of his off stump. C Wright hit the new bowler back over his head to get the runs started but Reynolds was run out to a keeper bye that was quickly retrieved. Enter M Philps renewing his school partnership with Wright. The pair started play good cricket and moved the score board along but Wright holed out cutting to straight to point. With the overs nearly up M Smith was well stumped and S Chitty hit a great four before being bowled through the gap. M Jacobs rotated the strike and ended up not out with Philps.
With only 74 runs on the board it was always going to be a hard task for the bowlers.
R Gavin and C Bryant opened the bowling and dismissed the openers without many runs. Although the bowling from the rest of the team was pretty good – runs leaked out regularly and the total was reached in the 18th over.
Once again M Jacobs was in the wickets with 3 for 14 off 4 and the team could have been well in with a shout had they scored 20 runs more.
The first loss for the season and to the runners up from last year.
