Match Report: Vine U13 vs Castle Hill
Castle Hill U13 travelled to Vine during cricket week to play an evening game at the Otford pitch. It was a fine day and this was the Vine’s last home game to a team above them in the table.
Castle Hill won the toss and elected field. Vine opened with H Jones and C Wright – an opening pair who were starting to find their feet and knuckle down to their task of seeing off the opening bowlers and keep the scoreboard ticking. Jones was caught driving on the up for 9 and Wright shortly thereafter bowled for 13 – but they had put on 25 and weathered the opening bowlers. C Bryant came to the wicket and played a measured but aggressive innings top scoring with his second 50 retired not out. S Brown and S Chitty both hit double figures (23 and 12 respectively) and Vine reached 132 in the 22 overs.
A fairly competitive score in the light of the season so far.
Castle Hill never really got going – losing one of their openers for a golden duck to a good length ball from Jones. J Phillips got an outside edge, well taken by the keeper and C Bryant bowled the next batsmen. Then it was the M Jacobs show, with a classic stumping followed by 2 wickets (bowled) to post figures of 3 overs, 3 wickets for 8 runs. With the total looking out of reach, everyone had a bowl – even our wickie, C Wright, who took his first (and only) wicket of the season.
Castle Hill reached 87 for 8 in their 22 overs and Vine leapfrogged Castle Hill in the league table.
Man of the match was C Bryant for a sparkling 51 not out.
