Match Report – SVCC U15 vs Speldhurst
25 May 2014 - Mike Wright
Vine U15 traveled to Speldhurst for their away fixture. It was half term and both sides were feeling the effects of players being away. Vine drafted in two under 13’s and Speldhurst played with 10 men.
It was a bright day, clouds in the sky, fair breeze but the sun was shining. Vine captain James Bevan-Thomas won the toss and elected to bat. The pitch was damp and the balls were keeping low. Vine openers, Bevan-Thomas and Tom Pollington got off to a brisk start with 50 up in the 7th over. With just over 100 on the board, Pollington retired on 50 and Bevan-Thomas was out forcing the pace for a fine 49 bringing Charlie Oster and Christian Bryant to the crease.
Oster began by striking some lusty blows however when he called Bryant through for a quick single Bryant perished to a direct hit. Tom James joined Oster and kept up the tempo until Oster swung across the line and had his bails removed for 17. Sam Marshall joined James and set about closing out the innings. Both scored at strike rate above 100 and James hit a magnificent 6 off the last ball of the 22 overs.
The Vine had exceeded their target and scored 207-3. The boys took a well earned drink, cupcakes and crisps and took to the field for the second innings.
Oster opened from the southern end, with some fierce pace bowling. Pollington took the northern end and was well rewarded with a wicket from a straight ball. Bryant came on for Oster and Andrew Reid -Dick came on for Pollington. Runs were hard to come by and Reid-Dick spun the ball ferociously from leg to off beating both batsman and keeper. Sam Chitty took over from Bryant and dislodged the bails in his second over. James took over from Reid-Dick but was lined up and dispatched to the boundary for two fours back over his head. Pollington returned from the southern end with an amazing two overs cleaning up the tail taking 4 wickets in his first over and 1 in his second. Special mention for Hugh Jones who took an amazing catch on the boundary diving to his left.
Match over and Speldhurst out for 91. Vine won by 116 runs.
Man of the match was Tom Pollington for a sparkling 50 not out and 6 wickets for 6 runs in 3.1 overs.
