Match Report: Vine U15 vs Bidborough

22 Jun 2014 - Mike Wright

Vine took on log leaders Bidborough for a match that may decide the league table at the end of the season. Having drafted in a late replacement for a player called up to the first team, Vine won the toss and elected to bat – a winning strategy to date.

Openers T Pollington and N Zuberi took to the crease. After receiving a first ball beamer (called No-ball) Pollington hit the next low full toss meekly to mid-on to get off to a terrible start. J Carslaw came in and looked solid – until top edging a slower ball up for a looped catch. N Bryant was out first ball top edging a easy catch. S Marshall didn’t trouble the scorers getting a faint edge to the keeper. T James put up a bit of a fight but was adjudged LBW to a ball on the top roll. C Bryant was caught at first slip to a diving catch. A Sackville-West also got a top edge sweeping and A Reid-Dick was out first ball swinging for the fence. Vine were 38/8.

Enter Sam Brown who likes to hit the ball straight over the bowlers head – which he did with aplomb. together with opener Zuberi they added 50 runs to reach 100 when Zuberi retired and F Avery held up his end to finish out the overs and Vine were 109.

Bidborough lost an early wicket and then others at regular intervals – but they maintained a good run rate whenever vine bowlers were wide or bowled full tosses. C Bryant had a great game as keeper – holding 2 catchers to give Vine a slim hope.

Bidborough reached the total in the 18th over.

First loss of the season –  and it could be the decider…

Man of the match was Noah Zuberi – a fine 50 Not Out in difficult circumstances with wickets falling around him.
