Tunbridge Wells

23 Jun 2013 - Gavan Burden

Vine u16 visited the County Ground at the Nevill for their latest Border League match. Tunbridge Wells elected to bat first and got off to a flyer as Gray and Pavey cashed in on some loose bowling. However Vorster and Bevan-Thomas applied the breaks for the Vine through some accurate bowling. Vorster was to finish with figures of 4 overs one wicket for just 4 runs. His wicket was the dangerous Harwood for just 2 runs. Wells proceeded steadily but never really accelerated as other Vine bowlers Prout , Bryant and  Tom James bowled tidy spells. Pavey reached a solid 50 for Wells and the innings came to a close on 121 for 3 off 22 overs.

Vine opened with Zuberi and Andrews and they did well to keep the Wells opening bowlers at bay as they put on 29 for the first wicket and gave a platform for the run chase. Zuberi went on to make 30 as he and Nick Bryant pushed the score up to 70. This brought captain Lawrence Thresher into join Bryant and the run rate began to come down through good stroke play and hard running between the wickets .With 2 overs to go Vine needed just 5 runs .However opening bowler Harwood came back into the attack and bowled a superb over going for just 1 run and grabbing the wicket of Bryant out for 33. Vine nerves were put to rest as Thresher hit the winning boundary off the first ball of the last over to win the game and leave him unbeaten on 33.  A hard fought victory for the Vine in a closely contested match between two teams playing  in the right spirit.

With 3 matches to go Vine will be hoping for a strong finish as they climb the league table once more.
